In 1917 with the overthrow of the Tsar the Russian State went in to Carl Fabergé’s factory and took everything. They confiscated his stock of eggs, diamonds and buildings and took all the paperwork and sketches and working drawings.
When the Soviet Union collapsed in 1992, Nikolai Shaidullin, a Russian General, bought the factory Alfa in St Petersburg. He expected that there had to be some value in the old drawings and sketches; and sent his staff out to look for the drawings that had been confiscated all those years ago. They eventually found 80 drawings in archives, which is why they are able to be the only factory in the world that is able to produce original designs by Carl Fabergé. These designs have been validated by the Russian expert Valentine Skurlov who is attached to the Culture Minister of Moscow and valuer to Christies.
The Alfabergé collection is based on original designs by Carl Fabergé, made in a Russian Factory 50 metres from Carl’s Fabergé’s original site.
